Award from President Obama affirms the College’s commitment to the community

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Aquinas College was named to the President’s 2014 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, marking the second year in a row Aquinas has received this award. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Recipient institutions reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.

Aquinas College received this award in 2013 and 2014. This prestigious award affirms the deep commitment Aquinas College has to community engagement and service. Aquinas currently has more than 1,000 active partnerships with more than 700 different community partners.

“Commitment to community has been a value of this College since its founding,” said Juan Olivarez, president at Aquinas College. “We are proud of this recognition from the President of the United States, as it validates the amazing contribution our students, faculty and staff are making on a regular basis.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, the Social Innovation Fund and other programs, and leads President Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve. CNCS has administered this presidential award since 2006 and manages the program in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.
