College also tops 500 in total number of all new students

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (August 14, 2006) - For the second year in a row, Aquinas College
will welcome a record number of freshmen students to campus for the start of a new
academic year. The 428 members of the Class of 2010, representing 12 states and two
foreign countries, will arrive on campus Thursday, August 17, to begin a two-day orientation
program before classes start Monday, August 21. This year's record number of freshmen
surpasses last year's previous record class of 396. Over 75 transfer students will
also be enrolling, bringing the College's total new student enrollment to over 500.
The freshmen arriving on campus shouldn't have any problems moving into their residence halls. The new students and their families will be greeted by dozens of volunteers – faculty, staff and current students – who will help move their personal belongings from their vehicles into their rooms. This means they'll be able to move in within minutes of arriving and be settled by mid-afternoon.
As the College anticipated the arrival of this large class last spring, it has some initial concerns about housing which was relatively tight. However, Aquinas moved some administrative offices from what was a former residence hall and renovated the area so it could once again accommodate students.
Admissions Director Tom Mikowski attributes the growth of new students "to increased marketing efforts; facility enhancements, such as the new Grace Hauenstein Library which is set to open in September; an increasing number of prospective students taking advantage of the College's special AQ Day programs; and Web site enhancements that showcase the College's academic programs."
"Those programs," he said, "include sustainable business, athletic training, sports management and the health professions."
In total, Aquinas anticipates enrolling over 2,100 students this fall in both its undergraduate and graduate programs.
