Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, will speak during Collegiate Challenge
at Aquinas College on Sunday, September 15, at 2:30 p.m. The event is held in conjunction
with the kick-off of the Frank Townsend Memorial Project, sponsored by several local
churches and supported by the seven-college consortium of Habitat campus chapters.
Townsend was a key founding board member of the HFH Kent County affiliate in 1983-84.
Fuller's talk is entitled "Laying the Foundation to Eliminate Poverty Housing". He will speak in the Wege Student Center ballroom at Aquinas to college students, faculty and staff attending the Collegiate Challenge Leadership Gathering. African Acapella, a Calvin College student music ensemble from Nigeria, will perform during the event. Representatives from Aquinas College, Calvin College, Cornerstone University, Davenport University, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, Reformed Bible College and Kent County Habitat for Humanity jointly planned and will be participating in the Collegiate Challenge.
The Collegiate Challenge is the consortium's response to Habitat's annual Building On Faith program, which has an international outreach. The consortium, an arm of the Habitat For Humanity organization, is comprised of student, faculty and staff leaders from area colleges and
universities who are interested in raising awareness and building support for the ministry among their student populations.
Following his Collegiate Challenge talk, Fuller will lead Project Ground Blessing Services at the Habitat for Humanity building sites, 913 Bemis SE and 905 Logan, starting at 4:30 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. he will speak at the Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church, which is hosting "FAITH LEGACY: Remembering Frank Townsend and Nineteen Years of Volunteers", a service of celebration and thanksgiving. All are welcome and there is no charge.
Area college students will help launch the Collegiate Challenge building activities on Saturday, September 14, with installation of first floor decks on foundations at 905 Logan SE and 913 Bemis SE. Construction of the two houses will take place between October 12 and December 14.
