GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (February 13, 2008) - On Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Aquinas College Performing Arts Center , Bishop Gumbleton, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit and former pastor of St. Leo’s parish in inner city Detroit will give a presentation hosted by Aquinas College Campus Ministry/Service Learning and Social Action Committee, the Social Justice Advocacy groups of St. Thomas, & St. Andrew’s Parishes, the Catholic Information Center and Pax Christi Groups from Grand Rapids and Muskegon.

Bishop Gumbleton is highly respected leader in the area of Catholic teachings on social justice, human rights, protection of refugees, and issues of war & peace and military build up. Bishop Gumbleton is well known both nationally and internationally by all involved in the Catholic peace movement. In 1972 Bishop Gumbleton was the founding president of the group Pax Christi - USA. The mission of Pax Christi is to reflect the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating and witnessing to the call of Christian non-violence. Pax Christi-USA rejects war & preparations for war and violence.

Bishop Gumbleton was President of Bread for the World from 1976 – 1984. He co-founded the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. He is a frequent visitor to many of the troubled spots in the world, including travels to Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, Jordan, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Haiti and was featured in documentary film, "Bishop Against Bombs." Bishop Gumbleton’s Sunday homilies appear weekly at "The Peace Pulpit" on the National Catholic Reporter web site. He founded the Catholic Caucus of Southeast Michigan and was awarded the Pax Christi Award, Michigan Ribbon Award and named an Ambassador of Peace.
