Grand Rapids, Michigan (October 19, 2001) ? A group of West Michigan jazz musicians
will present a benefit jam session to assist American Red Cross relief efforts in
New York and Washington with a two-hour performance on Wednesday, November 7, 2001,
7:30 p.m. at Aquinas College
Co-sponsored by Aquinas College's Music Department, "Jazz Aid" will bring together nearly two dozen area jazz musicians in a special presentation to be held at the College's Kretschmer Recital Hall in the Art and Music Center (off Fulton Street). Two area jazz bands are scheduled to perform. "Mind's Eye" will present original compositions in modern acoustical jazz while "Flagrant Disregard" offers a blend of jazz/rock fusion.
Steve Talaga, an adjunct assistant professor of music at Aquinas College and a member of both bands, said the idea came about as he and several other jazz musicians looked for ways to help relief efforts.
"As we started talking about the idea, we began receiving a tremendous response from other jazz musicians who also wanted to do something. Everyone wanted to be a part of it," said Talaga. "It'll be a great night of jazz for relief and a lot of fun for all."
Among the Jazz musicians scheduled to perform are Steve Talaga (piano), Rob Smith (trumpet/saxophone), Tom Lockwood (bass), Randy Marsh (drums), Charlie Hoates (bass) and Paul Brewer (trombone). Talaga said that many other area jazz musicians plan to "drop in" to perform in the final session. Organizers also plan to record the performance to create a CD, which can be ordered immediately after "Jazz Aid" for $10. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts stemming from the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Music Department by calling Diana Dixon at 616-459-8281, Ext. 3401.
